Boss Babe: Dr Tamara
Tweak chatted to entrepreneur and chiropractor Dr Tamara about being her own boss babe.
How did you get your ‘job’?
I got my job by passion and perseverance!! I always knew I wanted to be a chiropractor and by just knowing and believing, things fell into place. I got accepted to the school of my dreams and worked my butt off to make sure I got the career path I wanted. I showed up, gave my best and took on different mentors to learn from!
Why start a business when you did? What makes you different?
I had a passion for making people feel better and I realized the best way to do in medicine is through team work. What better than an integrated team of different professionals with different viewpoints coming together to work on different aspects of healthcare!! What makes me different is our approach. We only focus on what we do best, anything musculoskeletal related, and I’ve pooled in the the best talent and made it patient/ consumer focused, while being mindful of creating an optimal working environment for my team! Empowering them to be leaders in our structure and growth opportunities as doctors.
How do you make your customers/ clients feel confident when many stereotypes and social pressures are still so prevalent these days?
We are result driven! We make sure that the patient is well informed and educated and we empower them to make decisions that will affect their daily life. We also always think long term, rather than short term solution. Patient satisfaction is key.
What drives you to be better every day?
Knowing that I make an impact on people’s lives everyday. That they walk out feeling better and more confident than they walked in. That I’m a role model to others in my community.
What would you tell other up and coming women entrepreneurs- a word of advice?
Don’t focus on money. Focus on passion. Everyone has something they love and that they’re great at doing. Focus on what you love doing day in and day out. Because no matter how much you enjoy something, when you do it for money it becomes tedious. We all want to make money and be comfortable but that cannot be your only goal. Find a great support system/ team to help drive you. And lastly find balance. Women tend to be more emotional which is a huge advantage but can also be used the wrong way when you’re burnt out or tired.
You can’t give from an empty cup.
What does success mean to you?
Evolution. Knowing that the work you put in now will produce great outcome, build a strong foundation for your future and showing up everyday being fully glad you do what you do, knowing you’re doing it for the right reasons and it gives you purpose.
